The Research Network in Regional Climate Change Governance in North America brings together experts in North American environmental governance for the purpose of scholarly collaboration and sharing information on current bilateral, tri-lateral and cross-border regional initiatives aimed at greenhouse gas emission reductions and climate adaptation in North America. The primary objective of this project is to work in a tri-national research agenda, involving academia, government and industry in the field of North American climate change governance.

Two of the most widely circulated newspapers in Mexico – El Universal and Excélsior – have recently published a couple of articles written by the British Minister of the Environment, Lord Philippe Hunt, and the British Ambassador to Mexico, Judith MacGregor. Both of them are related to the International Forum on Energy that took place a couple of weeks ago in the Mexican City of Cancún. In their writings, Philippe Hunt and MacGregor acknowledge how important fossil fuels have been for economic development, and both foresee they will continue be so at least in the short and medium terms. This is undoubtedly a realistic approach, albeit the raising eyebrows among those of us who believe the world needs an urgent paradigm shift if we are to seriously prepare ourselves to face challenges related to energy (in)security.

April 12: Mexico Forest Project Protocol: Reforestation, Climate Action Reserve

A Webinar organized by Climate Action Reserve will be taking place from 9am to 1pm PDT to discuss the main challenges in the adaptation of American forest management protocols to the Mexican case. This, with the vision of strengthening the development of a North American carbon market.

The objective is to develop and strengthen quantification and verification methods for emission reduction projects in Mexican forestry. Climate Action Reserve will be working jointly with civil organizations, academia, consulting firms, private enterprises and government authorities to identify legal, institutional, political, and environmental challenges that this adaptation process of the protocol for reforestation entails.
